Improvement of capacity and infrastructure of government education services in 03 govt school in district Peshawar
Direct Beneficiaries The targeted population group of this project are Pakistani and Afghan refugee children and their families living in Peshawar district of KPK province, Tehkal Payan and Irrigation Colony Peshawar. The direct beneficiaries of the project are pupils at 638 primary schools in the named UC. The current share of Afghan refugees among the beneficiaries is about 12% (about 80 pupils).

With the closure of refugee camps and subsequent withdrawal of humanitarian assistance compelled these afghan families to urban localities, and turned in to alternate livelihood patterns for their survival. compelled these afghan families to urban localities Resultantly, the shift put huge pressure on the service structure including llivelihood, education, health, water and sanitation services in all metropolis of Pakistan specially Peshawar and surrounding districts.

Aim of Initiative:

Improved social cohesion between host community and Afghan refugees by reducing competition for scarce education resources through the provision of missing infrastructure facilities and through community mobilization.

Implemented Activities:

IDEA has implemented  RAHA project “Improvement of capacity and infrastructure of government education services in 03 govt. school in district Peshawarby rehabilitating boys primary school GGPS Tehkal Payan, Irrigation Colony in district Peshawar through repair of existing infrastructure and by adding new classrooms, as well as through strengthening school PTAs and community mobilization. The project was presented to and endorsed by the KPK Provincial Task Force (PTF) .

The missing education infrastructure facilities provided through this project, in conjunction with community mobilization, has improved social cohesion between local host communities and Afghan refugees.

IDEA has adopted strong mobilization strategy to aware the local community about the importance of education. To increase the enrolment in all schools, enrolment drives have been arranged. Parents have been mobilized to send their children to schools.

All the project activities listed below have been performed according to the Standard procedures.

  • 14 rooms constructed /renovated with Provision of missing facilities and equipment at selected 3 Govt: schools.
  • Primary school pupils receive training on hygiene and use of new school sanitation facilities.
  • Parents are sensitized to the long-term advantages of basic education, including for girls and Afghan refugee children, and are more willing to send their children to school regularly.
  • Pupils are assisted with accelerated learning through remedial Urdu lessons.
  • Advocacy undertaken for admission of Afghan refugee children to the national education system.

Through this project a decrease in class size and an increase in enrolment and attendance rates occur by pupils of both communities, especially girls. Through this project peoples achieve an increased awareness of and involvement in education matters by parents of the local communities. It is furthermore expected that the presence of Afghan refugees and enrolment of Afghan children in the national school system is considered more positively by local authorities and by the local hosting community on conclusion of the project.
